Budgies At Play Photo Album

Anyone who has observed a budgie knows how playful these little birds are. A simple piece of tissue (1 or 2 ply) can immensely amuse a budgie. Todays budgie owners can choose from a vast variety of budgie toys ranging from wagons to rope toys, bells to rings. A budgie owner can even purchase a play center with a swing, ladder, "monkey bars", etc to keep their budgie amused and out of harms way. Some people prefer to make their own budgie toys, but I advise against it. Budgies can easily get their claws tangled up the unsuitable types of rope or string, buttons, and even the common jingle bells. A single paper towel also potentially threatens the life of your beloved friend. Paper towels, especially the high absorbency types, can get lodged in the back of your birds mouth and any moisture, such as bird saliva, will cause the paper towel to expand and thus block off your birds air supply. Sound scary? You betcha! The best way to ensure your budgie's safety is to buy toys from a bird toy manufacturer. This does not guarantee that the bird toys are 100% safe, but it is still the safest route to go when looking for bird toys. The owner should, however, examine each toy carefully before placing it into your birds cage because even manufacturers make mistakes. Following are some general things to look for when purchasing budgie toys:

-Are the bells "cow bells" or "jingle bells"? If they are anything but cow bells, LEAVE THE TOY IN THE STORE!! Jingle bells are especially bad for trapping an innocent budgie's toe.

-If there is any dyed wooden blocks etc. is the dye vegetable dye, or claimed to be bird safe?

-Is there a chain on the toy? If so, are the links large enough to allow a budgie toe to easily fit through the link with room to spare?

-Is there any rope or tassels on the toy? Are the tassels any longer than 2-2.5 inches? If the tassels are longer, than LEAVE THE TOY IN THE STORE!

-Avoid any toy with any buttons!!

-Stay away from toys containing springs!!

-Are the closure(s) (both top and bottom) holding a bell, bead, etc. on the toy large enough to allow a budgie toy to fit through the closure with room to spare?

I know these rules may overwhelm a budgie owner, but as long as your aware of what to look out for, and what posses a threat to your bird, toy buying should be both fun and exciting.

Coming soon are pictures of "suitable" budgie toys!
